어릴 적부터 내장 목수였던 아버지를 따라 자주 현장 일을 돕곤 했다. 그때마다 아버지가 목수로서 실내 공간에서 하시는 작업을 자연스럽게 접할 수 있었다. 이 프로젝트는 내가 아버지 곁에서 함께 했던 여러 작업 중 하나인 몰딩에서 출발한 프로젝트로 디자이너인 나 자신의 배경과 성장에 관한 이야기이다.

Since childhood, I used to follow my father, who was an interior carpenter, to often help with his work. Every time, I could naturally encounter my father's work in the indoor space as a carpenter. This project is a project that started from molding, one of the many works I did with my father, and it's about my own background and growth as a designer

“건축이나 공예 따위에서, 창틀이나 가구 따위의 테두리를 장식하는 방법.”

몰딩은 천장과 벽면이 만나는 곳, 서로 다른 벽지가 만나는 곳, 바닥과 벽면이 만나는 곳, 문지방 등 서로 다른 성격이나 방향의 입면이 만나는 곳을 자연스럽게 마감하는 기법을 동사이자 그것을 위한 마감재를 지칭하는 명사 이다. 몰딩은 용도에 따라 다양한 크기와 모양의 단면을 지니는 자재를 통해 시공한다. 몰딩은 주로 45° 각도로 잘린 자재를 접붙임으로써 자연스럽게 연결되며 이렇게 연결된 자재는 활용에 따라 독특한 조형을 형성하며 시각적으로는 하나의 선으로 보이게 된다.

Molding is a verb and a term that refers to a finishing material for it, which naturally finishes where faces of different personalities or directions meet, such as where ceilings and walls meet, where different wallpaper meet, where floors and walls meet, and where gates meet. Molding is constructed through materials with cross-sections of various sizes and shapes depending on the use. Molding is naturally connected by folding materials cut at a 45° angle, and this connected material forms a unique form according to its use and visually appears as a line.

단면의 연장이라는 몰딩의 단순한 생성 원리는 그 자체로 조형적인 유연성을 지닌다. 이를 바탕으로 각 도면에 몰딩을 특정하기보다는 다양한 단면의 몰딩을 적용할 수 있게 열어둠으로써 몰딩에 내재한 조형적 유연성을 강조하고자 하였다. 생산자는 상황과 공간에 따라 적합한 단면을 선택함으로써 동일한 도면으로 각기 다른 분위기의 가구를 제작할 수 있다. 몰딩이 감싼 공간을 몰딩으로 이루어진 가구들로 채우는것은 공간의 언어를 자연스럽게 가구의 이야기로 연결짓는 것과 같다. 가구로 스며든 몰딩은 본래의 방식 그대로 장식이 될 뿐만 아니라 다리와 같은 구조체가 되기도, 판재를 잡아주는 연결체가 되기도 한다.

The simple generation principle of molding, which is the extension of the cross section, has formative flexibility in itself. Based on this, rather than specifying molding in each drawing, it was intended to emphasize the formative flexibility inherent in molding by opening it to apply molding of various cross sections. Producers can produce furniture with different atmospheres with the same drawings by selecting appropriate cross-sections according to the situation and space. Filling the space where the molding is wrapped with furniture made of molding is like naturally connecting the language of space to the story of furniture. Molding that permeates furniture is not only decorated in the original way, but also becomes a structure like a bridge or a connector that holds a plate.
